Wayne Cain’s tools? Mineral spirits, patience and decades of know-how.
At this stage of Monument’s historic window restoration, the work becomes exacting as Cain takes on one of the project’s most demanding challenges: restoring the Moroccan-style windows in the library.
The first step? Removing layers of hardened, century-old material. It’s some of the toughest putty Cain has ever encountered, requiring weeks of soaking before repair can begin.
Next, fresh putty replaces the old. Leadwork undergoes careful repair. Up to a dozen shades of 1920s glass are matched by hand to preserve the delicate variations in color. Cracks are repaired, but the character of the original glass remains.
That level of care defines the work — and sets the standard for everything that follows at Monument.
