Restoring William Bottomley’s Carriage House Garage Doors to Their 1920s Design

Some updates are purely practical. Others are all about history. This one delivers both.

At 2315 Monument Avenue, the carriage house garage doors originally designed by William Lawrence Bottomley featured a distinct three-door layout. This classic element of carriage house style garage doors was popular in the 1920s. Over time its historic design was altered. But now we’re bringing it back.

As part of this historic home renovation, Den Cralle walks us through the carriage house doors’ garage configuration. The goal? To bring back the home’s 1920s rhythm while adding modern functionality. A new spiral staircase will provide direct access to the rooftop terrace, improving flow without compromising the home’s historic integrity.

Looking to modernize your own carriage house garage door? Or just inspired by architectural details? Either way, this transformation shows how thoughtful design can elevate everyday functionality.
