A Tale of Two Timeless Homes and William Bottomley, Architect

What connects a Mediterranean Revival home in Richmond, VA, with a pink palace in Castine, ME? The same architect: William Lawrence Bottomley. And an architectural language that transcends time.

In this episode, Den Cralle and Avery Frank Designs walk the owner of Castine’s Pink Palace through 2315 Monument Avenue, another masterpiece by William Bottomley, architect of some of the most iconic homes of the 1920s. Though states apart, these two homes share a distinct architectural rhythm. And we can see proof that Bottomley’s work is both beautiful and functional — even a century later.

As preservationist Calder Loth writes, “A Bottomley house may evoke an image from the past, but it is not a historic structure in the sense that it belongs to a time of different living standards. Though many of his works are now some 90 years old, they remain modern in terms of their ability to accommodate today’s lifestyle requirements.”

In other words? These homes were built for real life — then and now.

Next, we get into the details. Watch how even the smallest elements, like historic windows, are being restored with care, craftsmanship, and respect for the past.
